New York based poster company Grey Matter Art recently launched with two fantastic posters for Cannibal Holocaust by Randy Oritz and Escape From New York by Gabz and are now back with their next two releases!

A couple of weeks ago Grey Matter Art teased of not one but two posters for, in my opinion, Troma’s best movies by Timothy Pittides and Godmachine. Now, we can finally reveal these two wonderful posters which we are really pleased to say will be available globally, so us U.K folks can also bag one, too!

 Timothy Pittides has taken on Cannibal The Musical by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker. The film, originally titled Alferd Packer: The Musical, was created by the pair while studying at University and released by Troma in 1993. I originally saw this movie around 1998 at the age of 12, just after South Park hit screens in the U.K. I was amazed by it. I had never seen anything so, to be frank, fucked up! It was hilarious. Me and my friends just ate it up. Since then I have lapped up anything by Matt Stone and Trey Parker and recently discovered a similar kind of magic when I saw The Book Of Mormon in the west end.

We recently spoke to Timothy who was kind enough to spare some time to talk about the poster and the awesome vintage style which he adopted for the piece.

Grey Matter Art will shortly be releasing your excellent poster for Cannibal The Musical at this years Troma Dance in Brooklyn. How did you feel when they asked you to tackle Cannibal the Musical?

Mike of Grey Matter contacted me regarding this film before they released their first poster. It was quite a honor that they had me in mind the entire time. I was happy to do it. And to have it debut at Tromadance 2014 is the extra icing on the cake.
The movie was the first by South Park creators Matt Stone and Trey Parker and later picked up by Troma for release. I remember watching it on a scuzzy copy back in the 90’s. Was the film something’s you personally were a fan of?

You know, I never saw the film until Grey Matter asked me to do the poster! I knew about it but never had the chance to view it. So I immediately ran into the living room and logged into Netflix and hoped it was available for streaming, which it was. I watched it and laughed my ass off. It was even better the second time around. I must have watched it four or five times before I even started the artwork. Brilliant film and it has become a favorite of mine.
Cannibal The Musical is set during the 1880’s in America and your posters style is very befitting of the era and unlike many posters released today, alternative or otherwise. What led you to making this style choice?

The retro parody poster idea was not the first idea at all. When I sat down and began thumbnailing the poster, the original idea was a 12″ x 24″ window panel to give it that old time play feel. When I began to pencil it out, it became clear that 1. the composition was feeling too cluttered. and 2. that the film deserved something better and bigger size wise. I went back to the sketch book and did some research. Being that the film was a parody of “Oklahoma!”I began to look at advertising and posters for that film which would lend itself well to parody. I found a great poster and began to work off of it. I had some much fun doing this. Posters from that time period are so great and vibrant, just pleasing to the eye. I may have to do this retro style again. It was that much fun.
This vintage style seems to be really underused and certainly lends itself to other movies. Would there be other films you would like to represent in this style.

I would love to try and do Robert Rodriguez’s Desperado in this style. Nacho Libre too. As well as some 70’s and 80’s horror films.
When you sit down to produce a poster or print, how do you initially approach the subject and decide on content and composition?

It varies from print to print. It really comes down to tone and story. Certain films are character based, which of course means likeness but other films do not require that. I felt that way about The Exorcist. Sure, I could have done Linda, or the priests, but to me, that is not what the film is about. Which is why I went in the direction I went in. I am trying to stay away from basic likeness collages for future prints. I believe you need to tell a story in the work. Combining both characters and story in one print while finding my own groove is going to be a goal of mine in the future.

Grey Matter art are certainly doing some great work and picking cult properties that often aren’t touched by other companies making them very unique and exciting. What was your experience working with them and will we be seeing more from you at Grey Matter?

Mike and Jared over at Grey Matter are some of the best people in this community. They are fans first. They truly care about the art and the artists who produce it. It is refreshing. They supported me in every direction and decision I made and working with me was one of the best working environments I have been in. Yes, I am a member of their roster and will be doing some more work with them in the near future.
You previously mentioned Desperado and Nacho Libre, for our last question, what would be the one film or property that you have yet to tackle that your are chomping at the bit to do?

The Shining. I have such a wonderful idea for the film that requires no likeness rights at all. Just hope I can translate it to paper.

On the back of his recent solo show at the Flood Gallery in London, U.K artist Godmachine has tackled arguably Troma’s most well known movie, 1984’s The Toxic Avenger. Directed by Lloyd Kaufman, acting under the pseudonym Samuel Weil, The Toxic Avenger spawned three sequels and a television cartoon, Toxic Crusaders. Remember that super catchy theme tune? At one point Arnold Schwarzenegger was lined up to star in a remake by Steve Pink, let’s hope that never transpires!

Both of these pieces will be available at Grey Matter Art table at the 15th annual TromaDance film festival at the Paperbox in Brooklyn, New York on the 27th and 28th of June. Any remaining copies going online on Tuesday, July the 1st between 1pm and 2pm. As a special incentive, Grey Matter Art and Timothy Pittides will also be offering a giveaway for the original 12×12 pencils for Cannibal the Musical.

Gallery 1988 Announce The Next In Their ‘Ghostbusters’ 30th Anniversay Online Releases, “They’re Here To Save The World” By Joshua Budich

Ever since Gallery 1988 announced back in January that they would be doing a Ghostbusters touring gallery celebrating the movies 30th anniversary, we have been excited to see each and every piece produced for the shows. The tour kicked off in New York on April the 19th before moving to L.A on May the 17th and opens in Chicago this Friday night at Rotofugi, 7pm while 10pm. Tomorrow Gallery 1988 continue with their series of online releases with a piece by Joshua Buddich, easily one of the best of the show.

A little while ago, Joshua was kind enough to take the time to answer a few of our questions on the piece, which impressively comes with full likeness rights by each of the key actors including the sadly departed Harold Ramis.

How did you feel when Gallery 1988 asked you to work on a Ghostbusters piece?

Ghostbusters has always been one of my favorite, and most memorable movie experiences of my childhood. I remember getting the “nod” from my parents, after they had pre-screened Ghostbusters for any questionable content, too racy or frightening for my virgin eyes. Then getting to stay up late to watch it! So, when 88 asked me to participate in this show, I of course jumped at the chance.

Your artwork is applauded and loved by fans for the character likeness and composition, how do you decide what your posters should include?

I knew going into this project that obtaining likeness sign-off from any of the actors I portrayed in the print would be a challenge. So, I had to let the composition dictate who to include, and who unfortunately had to be cut. I do this little exercise every time I create a character-based piece like this. For me, the print has to tell a story. Some parts of the film, although extremely memorable, have to be taken out.

Last year was a great one for you, where would you like this year to take you with your artwork?

Thanks so much! This year, I promised myself more personal projects. Opportunities to take more time with my work, and to reinvigorate my love for the process of creating these pieces.

A multimedia event that theVerge.com described as “a cyberpunk love letter in the form of a concept album. Its goal is simple: to craft new works inspired by the world of Blade Runner. To this end, several musicians, illustrators, and a writer have joined together to create what is essentially a collaborative art project, which will mix up illustration, music, and short stories into one cohesive whole. “It feels to me that the world of LA 2019 lives on independently of the movie now,” says one of the creators, Fredrik Segerfalk. “That’s why we want to go there to look for new moments.”

We’re Ready To Believe That Gallery1988’s ‘Ghostbusters 30th’ Gallery, Opening This Saturday, Is Going To Be Awesome

O.K, enough teasing already! Gallery1988 have finally revealed more artwork from their ‘Ghostbusters 30th Anniversary Tour’ Gallery event along with how you can get your hands on some. But it won’t be easy!

We have already seen the reveals of Joshua Budich’s and Anthony Petrie’s pieces which we revealed last week, now we can feast our eyes on works by Mike Mitchell, Nicole Gustaffson and DKNG.

It’s great to see Mike Mitchell dabbling in a different style and I really hope to be able to get a copy of that one. It even comes complete with a little Mike Mitchell Skully in the centre bottom left.

It all kicks off properly in New York City THIS SATURDAY NIGHT, from 7-10 PM at 69 Leonard St., near the famous firehouse from the film.

As for how to get a hold of the pieces, most of the artwork will ONLY BE AVAILABLE by attending one of the galleries in-person. A very small allotment of prints has been set aside for each city, with a smaller selection at the final Comic Con stop. Gallery1988 have promised that there will be small surprises at each stop as well.

However, a special set of commemorative series of 30th Anniversary screen prints will be made available online at ghostbusters30th.com. These will be released sporadically over the next month and will include Mike Mitchell’s poster as well as prints by Phantom City Creative, Anthony Petrie, Tom Whalen, Tara McPherson, Dan Mumford, Dave Perillo, Lora Zombie, Godmachine, Rich Kelly, Mark Englert, DKNG and Joshua Budich.

If that isn’t enough, Gallery1988 also will have very small amounts of collaborative t-shirts from LRG, Johnny Cupcakes, Homage & Rebel8 at each stop.

Another fantastic piece created for the New York leg of the show, which opens April 119th and runs until April 26th at 69 Leonard Street, between Church and Broadway, is by Anthony Petrie and features a brilliantly detailed map of New York forming the shape of the ever familiar Proton pack.

Along with these great pieces Gallery 1988 have released a full list of artists and designers taking part in the event which will also visit Chicago between June 20th and 22nd and culminate in a spot at San Diego Comic Con in July.

FrightFest Original Prints Give A New Spin on Horrific Horror Classics

Being a huge fan of the Horror genre I am always on the lookout for original and fun art pieces that show a certain level of knowledge and more importantly love of the genre. Well, when I was introduced to FrightFest (thanks to artist Jeremy Wheeler for the info) my Horror needs were more than satisfied.

Here is what Ian Rattray and Alex Chambers, the two founding members of the FrightFest, had to say about their work on their web page.

FrightFest Originals launched in August 2012 to promote UK screen prints for discerning collectors.  Ian Rattray is a founding director of FrightFest, the UK’s most successful genre festival, with 40 years of experience in the film industry.  He has travelled the world seeking out those odd films that appeal to our niche market, leading him to Toronto, via Cannes, Sitges, Austin and…well… most places

Alex Chambers is an art collector, FrightFester, film geek and devoted screen print fan.  After flying in the Royal Air Force and spending ten years whoring himself to the finance industry, he’s decided to turn a hobby into a business

We are for the fans, for the artists and all for exclusive stuff.  These posters are authorised and unique.

These two definitely have their Horror and Art credentials and when you see what artwork they have amassed for sale, I believe you will be suitable impressed, much like I was on my first exposure to them.

The amount of detail that has gone into these pieces is awesome. I love the fact it is not just main stream Horror movies that have made the leap to print. Some of the more Indi and low budget movies have also become poster art. The use of silhouette and minimalism in some of the pieces goes nicely with the all out visual assault of other more extreme posters in the collection. Personal favourites of mine have to be the Zombie Flesh Eaters poster and the fun yet for some reason mostly hated Nightbreed movie. Though they have only teased a few pieces at the moment, we will be seeing a lot more from this company in the months to come. Better move fast if you want some on your wall though as most runs of a poster only go up to 50.
