‘The Art of Laurent Durieux’, A Preview Of The Exciting Solo Mondo Gallery, Opening This Friday!

The time is nearly here for Mondo to lift the lid on their first gallery show of the year, a solo show dedicated to ‘The Art of Laurent Durieux’. Opening Friday February the 7th and showing through to March the 1st at the Mondo Gallery in Austin, Texas, this will be Laurent’s very first solo show and so far all the previews we have seen look awesome! Laurent is certainly one of my favourite artists and has a knack of capturing the pathos of a movie through his imagery.

Following on from the announcement of ‘The Art of Laurent Durieux’ last year, Laurent was kind enough to chat with me about what he was looking forward to most about his upcoming solo gallery.

[I will] meet all the poster enthousiasts in person and meet the Mondo guys as well, be able to put faces on all these names. Of course, as an artist it would be lying to say I’m not interested with the response to my work. I’ve been working (almost) like a slave 😊 for the last 6/7 months full time on those posters and I hope the hard work will live up to it, that the collectors and fans will dig them.

You can read the full article here.

There have been a few posters revealed so far ahead of the gallery officially opening tomorrow and there certainly seems to be a Hitchcock flavour to the gallery as his adaptation of Daphne Du Maurier’s novel, The Birds has 3 prints as well as Rear Window and Vertigo also being represented. Other prints include a tribute to Fred Wilcox’s classic sci-fi Forbidden Planet, a loose adaptation of Shakespear’s, The Tempest as well as those Back to the Future posters that were teased a little while back, too!
These posters have great use of colour and suit Laurent’s style brilliantly.

Laurent told Mondo on working on Forbidden Planet

“Man, I love this movie! So retro-futuristic, so naive, so kitsch! That’s really my dope! Robby the Robot is iconic which is why I had to put it as THE star of the movie poster. The original poster is just sublime, the colours are just so vibrant, and so I tried to emulate that impression on my own take of this science fiction classic. This poster is the piece that took me the longest to finish, almost 2 months! I think it was worth the effort and the number of layers!”

Laurent told Mondo his thoughts on working on The Birds

“The bloody beak of the crow is a direct reference to the scene where the neighbour is found in his bedroom by Jessica Tandy with his eyes missing. I originally wanted to place an eyeball in the crow’s beak, but I thought it was a bit too gory for a Hitchcock movie… so I toned it down a notch. I really love the variant on this one,”

Stay tuned for more poster reveals as we get them. This show is shaping up to be amazing. Laurent’s style certainly is sympathetic to the movies they represent and the style and colours are wonderfully retro. I can’t wait to see what he has planned for Back to the Future Part III as well as what other movies he will be representing. I did hear rumour there was an L.A Confidential… hmmm.
